The Salmon Lovers:
Resident Orcas

Resident orcas are the most commonly seen orcas in our area. They are true locals, known for their deep ties to the area and their family-focused culture.

Diet: Residents are fish-eaters. Their diet consists almost entirely of salmon, particularly the nutrient-rich Chinook.
Family Life: These orcas live in extremely stable, complex, and tight-knit family groups called “pods.”
Acoustics: Resident orcas use constant vocal communication to locate one another and coordinate their movements.

The Marine Mammal Hunters:
Transient Orcas

Transient orcas, officially known as Bigg’s Killer Whales, are the apex predators of the marine world. Their very name-Transient-describes their lifestyle: they travel widely, often in small, stealthy groups.

Diet: Transients are mammal-eaters. Their prey includes seals, sea lions, porpoises, and even other whales. Because their prey can hear their vocalizations, their hunting style is entirely different.
Hunting: When hunting, Transient orcas are eerily silent. They rely on stealth and powerful bursts of speed to ambush their prey. They often hunt in small, fluid groups, and their kills are fast and dramatic- a sight few forget on a Campbell River or Quadra whale watching trip.

Group Structure: Their pod structure is less rigid than Residents. While a mother-calf bond is strong, they often travel and form alliances with other Transients based on the current hunting opportunity.
